A miracle of modern science, Baked Alaska is ice-cream that is cooked, but doesn't melt. This is done by placing the scoop of ice-cream on a bed of sponge and covering the whole thing in merengue. After 5 minutes in the oven, the merengue has cooked, but the ice-cream hasn't melted (much).
